Manages and oversees the daily financial activities of a team of accountants who are engaged in calculating, posting, and verifying financial transactions, creating reports and reconciling accounts to ensure accuracy. Reviews and recommends updates to the accounting policies and procedures, by identifying process improvements. Monitors and updates internal controls to keep pace with system changes and company needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities involve the performance of office work directly related to management policies or general business operations. 
  • Manages the monthly, quarterly and annual financial close process, including ensuring all activities are properly recorded, reviewing for accuracy, completeness and timeliness, G/L accounts and bank statements are reconciled, management fees are accurately calculated and financial report packages are complete.
  • Ensures financial statements are accurate and complete by reviewing for proper use of G/L accounts, accurate coding of expenses, correct use of charge codes, proper classification of revenues and expenses, accurate use balance sheet accounts and overall review of financial statements for fluctuations, significant variances and unusual balances.
  • Reviews and approves cash transactions such as book transfers, wire transfers and distributions while ensuring proper backup and supporting documents are included.
  • Coordinates on-boarding and off-boarding of properties by reviewing and adhering to various agreements such as management agreements, partnership agreements, loan agreements, purchase/sale agreements, and escrow closing statements understanding the accounting requirements and requesting the necessary banking and system setup or close-down. Prepares due diligence work for new fund properties as part of the acquisition process.
  • Communicates and coordinates directly with outside audit and tax firms on all requests and schedules as well as resolves any audit discrepancies and ensures year end audits and tax returns are completed in a timely manner.
  • Reviews annual budgets and forecasts for the sections prepared by the accountants, that they are updated accurately and ensures that the due dates are met.
  • Tracks payment status of property tax bills, supplemental taxes and analyzes related accruals.
  • Ensures all lender reporting requirements are adhered to.
  • Reviews and reports on unclaimed property to the respective agencies.
  • Determines work procedures, prepares work schedules, and expedites workflow as well as develops proper month-end schedules and communicates with necessary departments.
  • Participates in the continual development/establishment of accounting policies and procedures, internal controls and operational strategies, including review and implementation of process and system changes.
  • Contributes to Business Intelligence reporting and related metrics and KPIs.
  • Assigns duties to staff members and examines work for accuracy, completeness and timeliness while following the established policies and procedures.
  • Establishes strong relationship with other departments within the company but also know when to escalate matters to the appropriate level.
  • Represents the company when communicating with outside owners/investors.
  • Upholds the company core values and embraces a customer service mindset to both internal and external customers.
  • Performs any other activities as directed by the Controller.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Directly oversees up to 6-8 non-supervisory accountants. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; evaluating performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; developing staff and building a strong pool of resources.
Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university and three to five years of related experience with one to two years of supervisory experience.
